The Art Department, conceived by the world renowned faculty behind The Illustration Academy, The Visual Literacy Program and Conceptart.org, are offering a chosen member of Talenthouse the chance to win a scholarship to their intensive four-week Illustration Academy summer program in 2011 that utilizes total immersion to shorten the learning curve for aspiring artists.

All you have to do is create an illustration that will be used as a promotional "Call for Portfolios" for submissions to attend The Art Department www.theartdepartment.org in 2010. The subject matter is open, but must be palatable, and should help to communicate the idea of "Call for Portfolios".

I am very excited to be a faculty member of THE ART DEPARTMENT, which is a school unlike any other that has ever existed. It is comprised of the faculty of The Illustration Academy, Massive Black, ConceptArt.org, and the Visual Literacy Program. We are offering four drawing based disciplines- Foundations, Illustration, Entertainment Design, and Drawing and Painting, as a hybrid of technology and tradition. This information is being delivered by many of the best practitioners in the World, and offers a highly flexible online education, and the option of attending one of two three week workshops each year, along with total immersion at one of four brick and mortar POD locations throughout the United States- Richmond, Virginia, Kansas City, Missouri, San Francisco, California, and Austin, Texas. I'll be running the POD based in Richmond, in the company of Josh George and Jeff Love. I am participating in a show at Gallery Nucleus in Los Angeles, which opens on Saturday, January 8th. The theme of the show is "Airships of Yesteryear". Thank you to Wade Buchanan from Gallery Nucleus for the invitation.

I've previewed several of the pieces from the show. In particular, watch out for the amazing work from Trey Bryan and a beautiful print from Andrew Wright.

It's a bit depressing, really...

Now that the show is behind me, I feel quite drained. I spent the weekend with family, recouping, and catching up on sleep. What felt like a conclusion, or finale, is actually just the first step.

Thursday night's preview, and Friday night's opening were the highlights of my artistic career to date. I was able to see so many warm and familiar friends, and family. I priced the show so that people who had supported me for the past ten years, could walk away with their first purchase of original art, from my first Solo Exhibition. That had the biggest impact on me emotionally. There are still a number of pieces left in the $25 range, and a couple in the $100 range. At the end of the opening, we had sold 55 pieces (closer to 60, I believe). I am attaching a number of pieces from the show.

Of note, I am inviting everyone who purchased work from this show to the Preview of the next show, where I am offering for patrons who have collected four small "anon" paintings to trade for the next size up (4- 3" x 3" pieces for 1- 6" x 6" piece, 4- 6" x 6" pieces for 1- 1' x 1', and so on.) As people move into new spaces, grow tired of old paintings, or simply want to trade up for a more valuable piece of artwork, they can attend my next exhibition with pieces from the "anon" series. In exchange, all I ask is that they use one of the paintings as their avatar on social media. I will have a website with a forum where patrons can contact each other for trading, bartering, etc. If you are interested in purchasing an original, please contact Ghostprint Gallery directly at (804)344.1557, or send me an email at: sterling@sterlinghundley.com.

The show was broken down into two series: "Of a Graphic Nature", and "anon". I have attached several pieces from each. Again,

Hello All,

I try to do my best to pay what I know forward. Now, I want to request help from all of you. With the assistance of Jeff Love, and Leslie Herman from the forum/Academy, and several others that I will thank later, I am pouring myself into my work for my debut Solo show on September 4th.

I will be showing 104 pieces of new work created for the show (in theory) at the opening. I am trying to do something original in the work itself, and unique with the sale of the work. I can't divulge everything until the show. If you have followed my work, and supported me over the years, I thank you. I hope that many of you can walk away with a piece from the show. This is a huge endeavor and risk for me. I have ambitions of heading to New York after this to beat the streets. In many ways, I am starting over.

I would truly appreciate it if you all would post the show opening announcement wherever you feel it may be applicable: Facebook, Twitter, Illustration Friday, ConceptArt, etc. I can't thank you all enough in advance, but hopefully things will make sense at the show.

August 14, 2009, Richmond, VA . . . The solo show of painter Sterling Clinton Hundley debuts at Ghostprint Gallery on September 4, 2009.
Hundley’s new body of work, entitled [i]Emergent[/i], evolves from his noted career in illustration. His title derives from the scientific term emergent, referring to the process of complex systems that are composed of lesser parts.
Hundley’s creative process begins with a 3" x 3" monotype, which he then develops into a sequence of progressively larger and more complex works based on a grid of square panels. The new works use radically different techniques while further revealing Hundley’s intense skill as a conceptual image-maker. The images are suffused with his signature wit and layered meanings.
Says Hundley, “I navigate the gauntlet of abstraction to arrive just this side of representational.”
Hundley’s honors include three gold and two silver medals from the New York-based Society of Illustrators. In addition, from 2006-2008 , his work received more awards from his peers than any other illustrator in the U.S.
His clients have included Richmond Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Atlantic Monthly, Entertainment Weekly, G Q, and The Washington Post as well as prominent theater companies. One of his paintings accompanied by an original story, has been reproduced on the final page of Virginia Living for several years.
Hundley is a Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at VCU in Richmond, Virginia and a core instructor at the Illustration Academy, which is currently held on the campus of Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.

Monday was a really good day. Leslie joined us and got right into the spirit of things by sanding some masonite for a few hours. We made some huge strides in preparing all of the building blocks for the show.
